Roatan’s beaches range from the postcard white sand of West Bay to quiet local stretches that see almost no tourist traffic, and the best ones share a defining feature: the Mesoamerican Reef sits close enough to shore that swimming and snorkeling are the same trip. You walk in off the sand and the coral starts.
West Bay Beach is the flagship and earns it: a long run of powder-white sand, calm turquoise water, and the reef within an easy swim at the south end. It is the busiest beach on the island, lined with resorts and beach bars, and on cruise ship days it fills fast, so go early or go on a no-ship day. Half Moon Bay in West End is the more local-feeling alternative, a curved bay right off the village strip where you can snorkel in the morning and walk to lunch without moving your towel.
Beach access in Roatan is straightforward: beaches are public, though resorts control much of the direct land access at West Bay, and day-pass arrangements exist if you want resort loungers and facilities. Bring reef-safe sunscreen; the same close-in coral that makes the snorkeling exceptional is exactly what standard sunscreen damages.
