About Independence Day (Honduras Public Holiday)

September 15 marks the day in 1821 when the Act of Independence of Central America was signed in Guatemala City, ending Spanish rule over the provinces that included present-day Honduras. The text was written by the Honduran Jose Cecilio del Valle.

It is a paid national holiday under Article 339 of the Labor Code, and the business council Cohep has said it cannot be moved to another day. In 2026 the banking association AHIBA confirmed that all bank branches closed on September 15, while correspondent agents and card terminals in shops kept working.
